Queen Mothers Award
for Liverpool
City Council
officials were in London yesterday to receive a prestigious Queen Mother's
Birthday Award. Liverpool was singled out by the Tidy Britain Group for
the way it's local environment has improved. They organised several campaigns
including a city centre Gold Zone initiative, sponsored litter bins, a
'pick-up' drive and an entry in Britain in Bloom. These campaigns were
all helped by schools, teachers and churches. The award ceremony took
place at the Hotel Russell but sadly the Queen Mum couldn't present the
award as she is still recovering from the fall she had last week, when
she fractured her collar bone. Princess Alexandra presented the award
on behalf of the Queen Mum. A city council spokesman said "We are
delighted our environmental initiatives have been recognised."8/11/2000
