Mole of Edge Hill
brought into the daylight as new tourist attraction.
Hidden
under the streets of Liverpool is a labyrinth of tunnels, built by the
so-called Mole of Edge Hill, Joseph Williamson. Men who had just returned
from the Napoleonic War were employed to work on these tunnels. Liverpool
planning chiefs have now given the go ahead to develop the entrance to
the Williamson Tunnels in Edge Hill. The development will eventually house
student accommodation and what was the Lord Mayors stables, will soon
house a visitors centre, craft work shop and other heritage businesses.
One of the tunnels is also being considered for use as a bar and restaurant.
Work is to begin on the site next month and it could be open to the public
as early as next Easter.
