HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in Liverpool to unveil Memorial

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh was in Liverpool last Friday 7th July 2000. He was in a very sombre mood at Liverpool Parish Church where he sat in a front pew totally absorbed, as the Rector of Liverpool Canon Nicholas Frayling, spoke of the wartime ordeals of the people of Liverpool and Bootle. After the service, in beautiful sunshine the Duke unveiled a 15' bronze statue by Liverpool sculpture Tom Murphy. The statue depicts a mother pleading with her son to stop playing and take shelter from the bombs. Inside the statue will be placed a roll of honour for the people who died in the Blitz. The Duke also planted a commemorative tree as the church bells played in the background.
