Attractions
Built
to accommodate sailing ships with up to 1000 ton's cargo capacity, the
Albert Dock was officially opened on 30 July 1848 by Prince Albert. By
the turn of the century, only a very small percentage of ships using the
docks were sail driven and in 1972 the docks finally closed.
On
24 May 1988, HRH Prince Charles officially opened the first phase of the
refurbished Albert Dock. The Albert Dock now houses approximately 55 retail
outlets plus numerous restaurants, modern bistro/wine bars, a 117-bedroom
hotel, health club and offices. The Tate Gallery Liverpool. The Beatles
Story and the Maritime Museum are just three of the individual major attractions
to be found here. There is no entrance fee to the Dock itself and the
huge car park is also free of charge.
